Nuggets' Porter has second back surgery

DENVER (AP) Denver Nuggets rookie forward Michael Porter Jr. has undergone back surgery in Dallas and there is no timetable for his return to the court.

The team said Thursday the procedure of the lumbar spine was performed by Dr. Andrew Dossett at the Carrell Clinic.

Porter was taken by Denver with the 14th overall pick in the June draft. He was considered a top-five selection before a back injury that required surgery limited him to three games at Missouri in 2017-18.

Celtics re-sign Smart for 4 years, $52M

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Celtics re-signed guard Marcus Smart on Thursday, bringing him back for four more years after he found the market for a restricted free agent defensive specialist wasn't as lucrative as he'd hoped.

A person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press that Smart will be paid $52 million over the next four years. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team did not disclose the terms of the contract.

Ex-Lakers reporter Chortkoff dies at 78

LOS ANGELES (AP) Mitch Chortkoff, a columnist and beat writer who covered the Los Angeles Lakers for over 50 years, has died. He was 78.

He died Tuesday at a health care facility in Van Nuys following a long illness, according to his brother Stan.

Pistons add Grgurich, Nori as assistants

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Pistons have hired Tim Grgurich and Micah Nori as assistant coaches.

Grgurich most recently was an assistant for Milwaukee, but he's spent the last 27 years with NBA teams such as Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Denver and Dallas. New Pistons coach Dwane Casey overlapped with Grgurich when both were with Seattle from 1994-98.

Bulls sign G Blakeney to NBA contract

CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Bulls have signed guard Antonio Blakeney to an NBA contract.

Undrafted out of LSU in 2017, Blakeney signed a two-way deal with the Bulls and averaged 7.9 points in 19 games while splitting time between Chicago and the G League's Windy City Bulls. He was the G League's Rookie of the Year, averaging 32.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists

Spurs trade Kawhi to Raptors for DeRozan

The Kawhi Leonard saga in San Antonio is over. So is DeMar DeRozan's time in Toronto.

An NBA summer blockbuster got pulled off Wednesday, with the Spurs sending Leonard to the Raptors as part of a four-player deal that has DeRozan heading to San Antonio. The Spurs also got center Jakob Poeltl and a 2019 protected first-round draft pick, while the Raptors acquired sharpshooter Danny Green.

Wade signs lifetime deal with Li-Ning

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade has a new contract - with his shoe company.

Wade and the Chinese apparel company Li-Ning announced that the three-time NBA champion has signed a lifetime contract with the brand, which he has represented since 2012. The finalizing of that deal coincided with Wade and the company revealing his latest shoe, the "Way of Wade 7," at an event in Beijing on Wednesday.
